The Best Time to Take Fish Oil: 5 Tips to Maximise Your Omega-3 Results

The timing and method of taking omega-3 fish oil are very important. A well-formulated supplement taken at the wrong time, in the wrong way, or in the wrong dose may not show any results. Most Indians are deficient. And many of those who do supplement are still not getting the full benefit because of avoidable mistakes in how they take it.

Here are five tips, rooted in how omega-3 actually works in the body, that will help you get more out of your fish oil capsules.

Tip 1: Take Them with Your Largest Meal of the Day

Omega-3 fatty acids are fat-soluble, which means your body absorbs them better with fats in your gut at the time of ingestion.

A 2019 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that taking fish oil with a high-fat meal increased EPA and DHA absorption by up to 300% compared to taking it on an empty stomach.

You can take omega-3 fish oil tablets and capsules with your lunch or dinner, or both. But the key to efficacy is consistency. Take it with the same meal each day so it becomes a fixed habit and so your body always has dietary fat available for absorption.

Taking fish oil on an empty stomach is also the most common cause of the fishy aftertaste or mild nausea that people report.

Tip 2: Split Your Dose. Don’t take it all at once.

If your recommended daily serving covers two fish oil tablets or capsules, take one with your morning meal and one with dinner, rather than both together.

Your body processes omega-3 fatty acids over several hours. Taking a large dose in one sitting could cause a sudden peak in the bloodstream followed by a drop, which is less efficient than a steady, distributed supply over the day. Splitting the dose keeps EPA and DHA at more stable levels in your system throughout the day.

This also reduces the chance of digestive discomfort. Most leading brands design their serving size across two capsules for exactly this reason. Follow the recommended dose on the label, and if it says two capsules daily, consider one in the morning and one in the evening rather than both at dinner.

Tip 3: Be Consistent for at Least 90 Days Before You Judge Results

Omega-3 is not an antibiotic. It has not worked in three days. EPA and DHA integrate into cell membranes slowly, over weeks and months. This is both how they work and why people give up too soon. While results are real, they are not immediate.

As a rough guide:

  • 4 to 6 weeks: Skin texture and moisture often improve. You may notice reduced dryness and a more even complexion.
  • 8 to 12 weeks: Joint comfort, energy, and mood stability typically improve as inflammatory markers begin to shift.
  • 90 days and beyond: Cardiovascular markers like triglycerides and HDL change. This is the timeframe used in most clinical trials.

Neuherbs' 90-day clinical trial on Indian adults at Currex Good Life Hospital, Bangalore, found triglycerides dropped by up to 26%, total cholesterol by 31%, and the inflammation marker hsCRP by 37%, all without adverse effects.

Missing doses break the build-up of EPA and DHA in your tissues. Consistency is more crucial than timing. Set a daily reminder if you need one.

Tip 4: Consume Less Omega-6 (trans fats)

Taking omega-3 fish oil while continuing to eat a diet high in omega-6 fats can reduce how well omega-3 can do its job.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids compete for the same enzymes in the body. When omega-6  is very high in your body, it overwhelms those enzymes and diminishes omega-3’s ability to reduce inflammation. The average Indian diet has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of around 20:1. You should aim for 2:1 to 3:1.

Common sources of high omega-6 in Indian kitchens are refined sunflower oil, soybean oil, and rice bran oil, as well as packaged snacks, reused cooking oil, and deep-fried foods eaten regularly.

You do not have to overhaul your diet entirely. Even modest reductions in refined oil use, or switching partly to cold-pressed mustard oil or ghee for daily cooking, can meaningfully improve the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio.

Tip 5: Pair Your Fish Oil Capsules with Vitamin D and Vitamin E for Better Results

Omega-3 fatty acids work harmoniously with other nutrients, and two in particular are Vitamin D3 and Vitamin E.

Vitamin E

Fish oil is a polyunsaturated fat, which means it is vulnerable to oxidation, both inside the bottle and inside your body. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects EPA and DHA from oxidising before they can be absorbed and used by your cells. A supplement that contains Vitamin E is a more stable and effective formulation.

Oxidised fish oil does not just lose potency; it can actively increase oxidative stress in the body, the opposite of what omega-3 is meant to do.

Vitamin D3

Over 70% of Indians are deficient in Vitamin D. Omega-3 and Vitamin D3 work together on heart, bone, and immune health. A supplement that contains both addresses two common deficiencies in a single daily habit.

Tips on Getting the Supplement Right First

These five tips will only work if the fish oil tablet or capsule you are taking is worth the effort. A poorly formulated fish oil, for example, low EPA and DHA, no purification, oxidised oil, or undisclosed fish source, will not deliver results regardless of when or how you take it.

Before focusing on timing, check your current supplement against these basics:

  1. EPA and DHA are listed separately in milligrams, not just total fish oil weight. A 1000mg capsule can carry anywhere from 150mg to 600mg of actual omega-3s.
  1. The fish source is named. Small deep-sea fish like anchovies and sardines are preferred as they accumulate fewer toxins and higher omega-3 concentrations.
  1. Molecular distillation is confirmed. This gentle purification process removes heavy metals, including mercury and lead, without degrading EPA and DHA.
  1. Certifications are visible and verifiable. FSSAI approval is the legal minimum in India. GMP, ISO, and the Clean Label Project add further assurance.
  1. Vitamin E is included. For the reasons covered in Tip 5 above.

Neuherbs Deep Sea Fish Oil 2500mg Lemon is India’s first lemon-flavoured omega-3 fish oil capsule and the only one clinically tested on Indian adults. Each two-capsule serving delivers 892 mg EPA and 594 mg DHA from Pacific anchovies and sardines, molecularly distilled, with added vitamin D3 and vitamin E. It is FSSAI, ISO, India Organics, and Clean Label Project certified and third-party tested for heavy metals and other toxins on every batch.

For vegetarians, Neuherbs Deep Sea Veg Omega (Algal Oil) delivers EPA and 2X DHA directly from marine microalgae, with no conversion needed. For general wellness and skin health, Omega ALA Flaxseed Oil Capsules are a plant-based supplement. Neuherbs’ full range is also available at Amazon, Nykaa, and Tata1mg.

FAQs

  1. Does it matter whether I take fish oil in the morning or at night?

What matters more than the time of day is whether you take it with a meal that contains fat. If your heaviest meal is dinner, take it at dinner. If you split your dose, morning and evening, with meals, it works well. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach, as this reduces absorption and increases the chance of a fishy aftertaste.

  1. Can I take fish oil with other supplements?

Yes, for most combinations. Fish oil pairs particularly well with vitamin D3, magnesium, and multivitamins.

But if you are on blood thinners, aspirin, or cholesterol medication, you must consult a healthcare expert, as high-dose omega-3 can mildly affect blood clotting. Speak to a doctor if you are on prescription medication, under treatment, pregnant or breastfeeding, or managing a chronic condition.

  1. How do I know if my omega-3 fish oil capsule has gone rancid?

Pierce a capsule and smell the oil. Fresh fish oil has a mild, clean scent of the ocean. A sharp or strongly unpleasant smell means oxidation. Rancid oil can increase oxidative stress in the body. This is why buying from a reliable source, checking the manufacturing date, and storing your bottle in a cool, dry place is important.

  1. Is it safe to take fish oil every day long-term?

For most healthy adults, yes, it is safe. The US FDA considers up to 3 grams of combined EPA and DHA per day safe for long-term daily use. Standard supplements of 500mg to 2000mg of EPA and DHA are well within that range. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on blood thinners, or managing a chronic condition, consult your doctor before starting or changing your dose.
